Steps to Finding a Great Wedding Photographer

This is a guest post by Georgia Selih.

Your perfect day is almost here. Everything needs to be planned to the smallest detail, and you will make sure that the day is captured in the most beautiful photographs. But how can you make sure that your photos are the best? Well, the most important step is to choose the right photographer. And doing that is no easy task, so here are the things you need to consider before you choose who gets the honor of taking your wedding photos.

Choose a Style

There are so many different styles of wedding photographs and choosing your favorite style is the first step. Think about what those photos mean to you: Do you want them to capture the atmosphere of the day? Do you want them to portray you and your partner in the best possible light? Do you want them to be ceremonial and official or intimate? Each photographer has their own style so make sure you are choosing them because of the style they excel at. You might even opt for several photographers – one to take the official, posed photos, and one for the party and the ceremony.

Adapt to Your Venue

Outdoor photography differs drastically from indoor photography, and having the right photographer for the job is extremely important. It is also important for your photographer to know in advance which venue they will be shooting at because each setting requires specific equipment and conditions. If you want your posed photographs to be outdoors, your photographer might ask you to do them several days before or after the actual wedding, for the ideal weather conditions.

Ask Around

The best way to know you’re really getting what is advertised is by talking to the people who have actually used the service. Ask friends and family who have recently been married or who have seen some amazing wedding photographs from weddings they attended. Too often the photos we see on the advertisements are staged with models and sets, instead of being from actual weddings, so make sure you do your digging and find someone who has good reviews and many recommendations. Great places to look are personal blogs, photography and wedding conventions and bride-to- be forums.

Go Local

If you are getting married in a different town or even a different country from where you live, you might be tempted to still look for photographers in your area. But, remember that if you are asking them to travel a long way to take photos of your wedding, you are going to have to pay for their trip and accommodation. Instead, why not look for photographers that are local to where the wedding will take place? I was lucky enough to find professionals in wedding photography from Sydney when I was getting married there, and having local photographers is great because they will know the best locations for pictures, and they will be able to recommend and pair you with the best hair and makeup stylists in the area.

A good photographer should be easy to talk to and will want to work with you, and not just for you. They know their job best, so don’t be a backseat driver; however, do let them know what you expect from the pictures and what you want them to capture. Remember that when you look at those pictures decades from now, you won’t be thinking about whether or not your hair was perfect and whether all the bouquets had the exact same number of flowers. You will only remember the smiles, so make sure you smile wide.
